Richard & Sarah Elphick of Wartling
Richard, the second son of Samuel and Mary, was baptised in Pevensey on 1 July 1763.
Sarah Wratten, a daughter of Nicholas and Amy (Emma), was baptised in Ninfield on 10 May 1770.
Richard Elphick married Sarah Wratten in Wartling on 30 November 1791 and they are known to have had the following children baptised in Wartling:

In 1841 Richard and Sarah were living at Boreham Street, Wartling, and Richard was listed as an agricultural labourer. Sarah was buried in Wartling on 12 March 1846 aged 75 and Richard was buried there on 3 June 1849 aged 86.

William was a gardener and nurseryman and they lived in Gardner Street, now the main part of the village of Herstmonceux. At all of the census dates from 1851 they had one or more of their son David’s children living with them. From 1861 Mary was shown as blind. Mary died in 1881 at the age of 90 and William was buried in Herstmonceux on 16 January 1886 aged 93.

Alfred married Mary Ann Smith in Hellingly in 1837 where they are known to have had 9 children. He was a gardener and in the 1860 he moved to Reigate but by 1901 he had retired and they were living in East Hoathly.

David married Ann Butler in Chiddingly in 1834 and they are known to have had 9 children in Herstmonceux where he worked as a gardener. David died in 1872.
